Georgia Tech freshman Dorian Walker, recruited as a possibility at wide receiver and cornerback, will start out at cornerback. Walker, from Mount Paran Christian School, was with the cornerbacks as the Yellow Jackets opened preseason practice Saturday.
Walker was a running back at Mount Paran Christian, where he ran for 2,262 yards as a senior and led the Eagles to the state Class A private-school championship in December. His sprinter speed and athletic ability helped convince Tech coaches to look at him differently, however. He is the only member of the signing class who is listed on the roster with two positions.
Walker is one of three incoming freshmen at cornerback, joining Meiko Dotson and Dante Wigley. One class ahead of them are three sophomores who play cornerback, Step Durham and twins Lance and Lawrence Austin, although Lawrence was listed as a safety on the post-spring depth chart.
For the freshmen, playing time this season may be determined by their ability to contribute on special teams.
Regardless of his position, Walker is one of the fastest players on the team. In high school, his fastest time in the 100-meter dash was 10.71 seconds, which was .11 seconds off the qualifying time for this year’s USA Track and Field junior nationals.
