Georgia coach Mark Richt declined to say who would and who wouldn’t make the trip to South Carolina. But if Shattle Fenteng does end up traveling, it doesn’t look like he’ll contribute much on defense.
Fenteng, a junior college All-American from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College by way of Grayson, saw action on just two special teams plays in the Bulldogs’ opener against Clemson and got no snaps at defensive back. Before a shoulder injury sidelined him early in preseason camp, the 6-foot-2, 187-pound athlete was performing like a potential starter at cornerback.
“Shattle has worked hard but his shoulder is the biggest issue right now,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “If he was 100 percent, would he be playing and starting and all that? I wouldn’t say that. But I’d say (the shoulder is) keeping him from being in position to do that.”
Ultimately, Fenteng lost the playing-time competition against junior Devin Bowman, who is slated to start his second straight game at boundary corner on Saturday. Freshmen Rico Johnson and Malkom Parrish and junior Sheldon Dawson also got snaps at cornerback against the Tigers.
While the arrow is pointing down on Fenteng at the moment, it appears to be pointing up on two other defensive backs. Richt did allow that redshirt freshman Tramel Terry, a former “Mr. Football” in South Carolina, is definitely going to make the trip to Columbia. Terry was switched to safety from wide receiver after last season. Richt also said there’s a good chance that walkon Devin Gillespie, a sophomore safety from Grayson, will get some special teams work on Saturday.
