Georgia Tech offensive tackle Eason Fromayan is closing in on the starting job at left tackle. Fromayan has been competing with Andrew Marshall and Jake Stickler.
“Well, Eason’s been playing with the (first string) all camp,” coach Paul Johnson said Monday. “I would imagine, unless something happens, he’d be the guy.”
Marshall and Stickler have both missed time with injuries during camp, giving Fromayan more snaps in practice. Fromayan, a junior, has one career start to his credit although he has played 25 career games. Stickler returned Monday from a head injury. Marshall has been out with an undisclosed injury but is expected back soon.
“(Fromayan) has gotten a lot better,” offensive line coach Mike Sewak said. “He’s become more reliable as the (preseason) has gone on and he’s starting to go ahead and pull himself away because he’s gotten so many good reps.”
The starting offensive line would be Fromayan at left tackle, Will Bryan at left guard, Freddie Burden at center, Shamire Devine at right guard and Trey Klock at right tackle. Marshall and Stickler are still candidates for playing time as part of a rotation.
Fromayan made great strides over the offseason in the team's program to lower body fat. Fromayan said he dropped his body-fat percentage from 27 to 17 percent, and his weight dropped from a high of 296 to 270 earlier in the preseason.
“Definitely better off the line, better first steps, better stamina, better recovery,” Fromayan said.
After redshirting in 2013 at TCU, Fromayan transferred to Tech prior to the 2014 season. He received a hardship waiver from the NCAA to have immediately eligibility as he was returning to be close to his family, particularly his ailing grandfather.
