Georgia Tech safety Demond Smith made one of the plays of the morning, coming up in run support to stop quarterback Tim Byerly short of the first-down marker on a 4th-and-1 play.

With a veteran like Smith, “that’s what you expect: You understand situational awareness, playing within the framework of the defense, and at the same time, when you have a chance to make a play, make it,” defensive coordinator Ted Roof said. “But we missed some (Saturday), too.”

Linebacker Beau Hankins made a few well-timed blitzes to break up plays in the backfield with the second string. … Three freshmen were in with the No. 2 defense, cornerbacks Lawrence Austin and Step Durham and defensive end Tyler Merriweather. Freshman KeShun Freeman is ahead of Merriweather with the first string.
