Georgia Tech’s top three B-backs didn’t run for a combined 277 yards and five touchdowns by themselves. Center Freddie Burden was named the team’s offensive player of the week for his performance in the Yellow Jackets’ 69-6 rout of Alcorn State in the season opener Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Coaches also named linebackers P.J. Davis and Terrell Lewis defensive and special teams player of the week, respectively.

B-backs Patrick Skov, Marcus Marshall and Marcus Allen gained much of their yardage running through gaps created by Burden and his linemates. Tech gained 476 rushing yards on the night on 52 carries, a 9.2 yards-per-carry average. On Marshall’s 49-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter, Burden drove defensive tackle Deion McNair five yards backwards to lead Marshall through the line and send him to the end zone.

“My o-line did a great job on both of those (touchdown runs),” said Marshall, who also scored on a 64-yard run in his first college game. “They made my job easy. I really just outran people.”

Davis had two tackles, one for loss, and forced at least one incompletion on a blitz. Lewis made two special-teams tackles, including one on a punt for a 2-yard loss.

Tech practiced Saturday morning in preparation for its game next Saturday against Tulane.
