Florida coach Will Muschamp announced Wednedsay that freshman Treon Harris will start at quarterback for the Gators when they play No. 9 Georgia in Jacksonville on Nov. 1.
This came as a surprise to noone, including the Bulldogs, who must figure out how to defend him.
“I’ve been watching him,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday. “Very dangerous athlete. It’s kind of like playing a guy who’s in the ‘Wildcat’ every snap, except for he can really throw it. … This guy is a very dangerous runner and throws the ball well. That always creates problems. Defensive coordinators don’t like facing guys like that.”
The Gators were left with no choice but to turn to the freshman last week as fourth-year junior Jeff Driskel had a dreadul outing in a 42-13 loss to Missouri. Driskel turned the ball over four times (two were returned for touchdowns) and did not lead a single scoring drive. Harris led Florida to all 13 points.
“You saw what he did late in the game [vs. Missouri],” Muschamp said of Harris. “He has a knack for making plays and making some good things happen for our football team.”
While Driskell has turned the ball over 12 times in his past four games, Muschamp said, “Jeff’s certainly going to have a role in the game.”
