BULLDOGS’ WILD FINISH

Georgia coaches are waiting to hear from five key recruits Wednesday, national signing day.

Time; Player, Pos.; Schools considering

8:30 a.m.; DaQuan Hawkins, DL; UGA, Missouri

8:45 a.m.; Patrick Allen, OL; Ohio State, UGA, Tennessee

11 a.m.; Roquan Smith, LB; UCLA, UGA, Michigan

11:10 a.m.; Rico McGraw, DB; UGA, Alabama

6 p.m.; Terry Godwin, WR; UGA, Auburn

It’s going to be a wild, wild finish for Georgia on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs enter national signing day with 24 commitments and the nation’s No. 7-ranked class in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Depending how things unfold with some highly prized prospects, UGA could sign as many as 31. The Bulldogs could rise or fall in the rankings, maybe even plummet, with the emotions of the team’s fan base hanging on each decision.

At least two current UGA commits will decide whether to stick with the Bulldogs or go elsewhere. At least five other high school stars who are uncommitted will decide between UGA and other finalists.

Here are five UGA storylines:

Darius Slayton, WR, Greater Atlanta Christian (committed to Auburn, 7:30 a.m.): Slayton switched his commitment from Georgia to Auburn late Tuesday night. He picked UGA in December, but the Bulldogs lost footing when offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was hired as Colorado State's head coach. That provided an opening for Auburn, which has a family connection to Slayton's family (a cousin played for Tigers). UGA felt pretty good about its chances until Slayton canceled an unofficial visit to Athens this past weekend, Instead, Slayton chose to remain at home to discus the quandary with his family. Even his parents weren't quite sure about the situation late Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s tough right now,” said his mother, Pamela Slayton. “It’s the biggest decision that he’s ever made in his life. We’re just trying to support him in it. And let it be his decision.”

Slayton announced that decision late Tuesday night on Twitter: “I am happy to say that I have officially committed to the University of Auburn WAR EAGLE!”

Patrick Allen, OL, Reistertown, Md. (UGA, Tennessee or Ohio State, 8:45 a.m.): Allen committed to UGA last summer, but reopened his recruitment when UGA offensive line coach Will Friend was hired by Colorado State. Allen was expected to commit to Tennessee on national television during a high school all-star game last month, but postponed at the last minute — which gave UGA an opening again. Ohio State appears to be the school to beat, and if Allen doesn't pick the Bulldogs, it could set off a chain reaction on signing day. UGA may try to poach another school's recruit, as it did Monday. After the Bulldogs lost a running back, they stole a commitment from Georgia Southern.

Roquan Smith, LB, Macon County (UCLA, UGA or Michigan, 11 a.m.): If there's one defensive recruit who UGA has to sign Wednesday, it's Smith — because of little depth at linebacker. He has been considered a "lean" to the Bulldogs since Florida fired coach Will Muschamp. However, Smith visited UCLA last weekend, and there were reports that he "secretly" committed to the Bruins, which Smith's high school coach said were untrue.

Rico McGraw, S, Nashville, Tenn. (UGA or Alabama, 11:10 a.m.): Could McGraw commit to UGA for a second time? The Bulldogs were his original choice a year ago, but McGraw switched to Alabama last summer. However, UGA defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt never stopped recruiting McGraw, who reneged on Alabama last week and took an official visit to Athens.

Terry Godwin, WR, Callaway (UGA or Auburn, 6 p.m.): Godwin committed to UGA more than a year ago, but Auburn felt so good about its chances that coach Gus Malzahn made two separate trips to see Godwin in Georgia last Saturday — even though Auburn had other recruits visiting its campus. This could develop into nation's biggest recruiting story by Wednesday evening because 1) most other prospects will have decided and 2) Godwin doesn't plan to announce his decision until 6 p.m.

Others to watch are Dunwoody offensive lineman Nick Buchanan (UGA or Florida), Westlake defensive lineman DaQuan Hawkins (UGA or Missouri), and defensive back Deandre Baker of Miami (UGA or Texas).
