Four days after tweeting that he committed to the University of Georgia, basketball prospect Michael Edwards finally signed a national letter-of-intent with the Bulldogs.

Edwards, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward from Westland, Mich., averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals this past season at John Glenn High School. He earned all-state honors from the Detroit Free Press and MLive.com and was recently rated the No. 4 senior in the state by PrepHoopsMichigan.com.

“We are very excited to add Michael into our program,” Fox said. “He brings an element of length and athleticism that will benefit our team in the coming years. Michael comes from a great family and we are thrilled to have him coming to Athens.”

It’s the second year in a row the Bulldogs went north to Michigan to procure one of that state’s best basketball players. Pontiac native Yante Maten, who was the Gatorade player of the year in 2014, averaged 5 points and 4.3 rebounds as a freshman forward at Georgia this past season. Assistant coach Jonas Hayes was the lead recruiter on both players.

Edwards is the fourth high school senior to have signed with Georgia for the Class of 2014-15 and the 13th on player on scholarship overall, which is the NCAA maximum allotment. However, the Bulldogs currently have an offer on the table for 6-7 wing/forward Jaylen Brown of Wheeler, the state’s top player.

During the early signing period last November, the Bulldogs signed guard Will “Turtle” Jackson from Athens, forward Derek Ogbeide of Mableton, and forward E’Torrion Wilridge of Beaumont, Texas, to the program. Georgia completed the 2015 season with 12 players on athletic grants-in-aid, including a 3-man senior class of Marcus Thornton, Nemi Djurisic and Taylor Echols.

Rivals.com basketball recruiting expert Dan McDonald said it is likely the best overall class of Fox’s career.
