ATHENS — The "Black" team prevailed in Georgia's annual spring intra-squad game Saturday afternoon in Sanford Stadium, defeating the "Red" team 24-17.
The Red team featured, for the most part, Georgia’s first-team offense and second-team defense, while the Black team consisted of the first-team defense and second-team offense.
Brice Ramsey opened the game as the Red’s starting quarterback, but Faton Bauta, who started for the Black team, later switched sides so that he and Ramsey could share QB reps with the first-team offense, as they have throughout spring practice.
Ramsey completed five of nine passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Bauta completed 16 of 25 for 171 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Park completed 10 of 15 for 92 yards and threw the day’s only interception.
The battle for the starting quarterback job will extend into preseason camp in August, coach Mark Richt said.
The Black team struck first at G-Day on a one-yard touchdown run by A.J. Turman following two Bauta pass completions. Ramsey then displayed his strong arm and Isaiah McKenzie showed off his speed as the two connected on a 72-yard touchdown as the Red tied the game. McKenzie, however, injured a hamstring on the run, ending his day.
At halftime, the Black team led 14-7 as a result of a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bauta to Jordan Davis on the first play of the second quarter.
A 52-yard touchdown run by Turman, who finished the game with 106 yards on 26 carries, stretched the Black’s lead to 21-7. The Red rallied a bit on a 25-yard Marshall Morgan field goal and a 17-yard touchdown run by star tailback Nick Chubb.
Chubb played relatively little. He finished with three carries for 34 yards and three receptions for 23.
