Following his team’s lackluster win over Boston College in the season opener, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has liked what he has seen in practice this week. However, he acknowledged that how his team practices may have limited meaning.

“I think it’s been better, but camp was good,” Johnson said Wednesday following the team’s third practice of the week. “Practice has not been that bad. What we’ve got to do is carry it over to the game.”

In the 17-14 win over the Eagles in Dublin, the Yellow Jackets scored fewer than 20 points in an ACC game for the first time since the 2013 season, ending a 21-game streak of league games with 20 points or more. It ended the second longest streak for any power-conference team. Johnson deemed the Jackets fortunate to have beaten Boston College, describing a litany of mental mistakes committed in the game.

Johnson said that the offense had 46 missed assignments in 54 plays.

“They’re a very good defense, and they did a very nice job,” Johnson said of the Eagles. “But if we’re going to win another game, we’ve got to play better than that.”

At the beginning of this week, Johnson put jobs in the air. There were five positions on the depth chart released Tuesday – one A-back slot, three spots on the offensive line and punter – where the starter would be determined by practice performance.

“We’ll set down and decide after (Thursday’s) practice,” Johnson said.
