Georgia Tech filled its senior woman administrator vacancy Tuesday, naming Agnes Scott College associate dean Joeleen Akin to the position.

The job had been open since Teresa Wenzel’s departure in December. Akin served as athletic director and physical education chair for 12 years at the Decatur women’s college before her promotion to associate dean for athletics and student activities in 2015.

Akin was at Tech from 1996 to 2003 before going to Agnes Scott, serving as director of women’s basketball operations, marketing/operations manager and marketing director.

At Tech, her full title is associate athletics director for student-athlete development and senior woman administrator. The principal of providing Tech athletes a broader collegiate experience has become a greater priority in recent years under athletic director Mike Bobinski’s watch and one that figures to become a responsibility for Akin.

At Agnes Scott, a Division III school, Akin implemented initiatives for the school’s varsity athletes, including an orientation program and coordination of campus-wide academic resources. She developed a revenue-generation model that produced a 200 percent increase in the school’s athletic budget. She also coached the basketball team 2003-07 and was commissioner of the Great South Athletic Conference 2011-16.

She is a graduate of Kansas State and worked previously at Auburn and N.C. State.

“I am thrilled to return to Georgia Tech,” Akin said in a statement. “I want to thank Mike Bobinski and the coaches and staff members that were part of the search process. I am excited about working closely with the student-athletes and coaches. While opportunities and life changes took me elsewhere 13 years ago, my passion for Georgia Tech never wavered. It feels good to be home.”
