Freshmen scored all four of Virginia Tech’s touchdowns in its 35-17 victory over Western Michigan, continuing a season-long trend.

First-year and redshirt freshmen have scored 15 of the Hokies’ 19 touchdowns, including four from receiver Isaiah Ford, who caught a 7-yard scoring pass in the third quarter Saturday.

Other young contributors included running back Shai McKenzie, who rushed for 87 yards and a 4-yard score, tight end Bucky Hodges, who had a 29-yard scoring catch and even linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka, who returned a fumble 11 yards.

Off the bench

Sophomore Matt Johns threw two interceptions early in Virginia’s 45-13 victory over Kent State, but made the most of his first career start.

With starting quarterback Greyson Lambert (Wayne County) on the bench with a right ankle injury, Johns threw for 227 yards and scoring passes of 27 and 11 yards and found the end zone on a 1-yard run.

His touchdown pass to Khalek Shepherd gave the Cavaliers a 14-10 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Numbers game

20 Florida State extended the nation's longest winning streak by rallying from a 17-point deficit to defeat North Carolina State 56-41.

129 Yards rushing by Louisville running back Brandon Radcliff, who also had touchdown runs of 29 and 16 yards in the Cardinals' 20-10 win over Wake Forest.

He said it

“I said in the locker room, this is a devastating deal. You just hope that somehow in there, there is a way to learn how fragile it is, how tough it is and why we practice the way we do. Why we coach the way we do to be able to close these games out. When you let these games get away, they’re gone forever.” — Boston College coach Steve Addazio after Colorado State’s 24-21 victory over the Eagles, who were outscored 10-0 in the fourth quarter

“We’re still a work in progress. Thank God we have a great defense.” — Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, whose Cardinals gave up just 100 total yards their victory.
