Jamari Dunbar, a 5-foot, 9-inch running back from Bamberg, SC, is still undecided about where he will play college football next year, but Georgia Tech could be a good landing point.
So far, Dunbar received offers from Georgia Tech and Kansas State, according to 247Sports. Dunbar also visited East Carolina University in April, according to his Twitter page.
The 3-star running back’s senior season with Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School will begin this Friday, Aug. 19 against Woodland High School from Dorchester, SC.
Dunbar’s team, the Red Raiders, finished the 2015 season with a record of 11-2 — their two losses coming from playoff games.
During the Red Raiders' season opener on Aug. 21, 2015 against Williston-Elko High School from Williston, SC, Dunbar had a few other highlights that caught the Aiken Standard's Kyle Dawson's eye.
One of the highlights from the Red Raiders' 2015 season opener was Dunbar’s 67-yard punt return touchdown. The Red Raiders went on to win the game, 46-15.
Dunbar’s display of power returning the punt in the Red Raiders' season opener could be advantageous for the Yellow Jackets who lost punt and kick returner Jamal Golden’s last season.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said this week that finding kick and punt returners is a top priority for the Yellow Jackets this season.
Improvement in the area of returning will be a long term goal for the Yellow Jackets who landed 12th in the ACC in all returns with 590 yards on 31 attempts.
“We’ve kind of skewed the stats a little punt return-wise,” Johnson said Wednesday. “We had one long one for a touchdown and the rest were not very good. We’d like to get back where we can block some kicks.”
Although the Yellow Jackets will need a kick returner in this upcoming season during Dunbar’s senior season, he could be an asset to the Yellow Jackets in 2017 and beyond.
