Hurlie Brown, who won two national championships as a defensive back for the University of Miami, was named the Hurricanes’ running backs coach Sunday.

Brown replaces Terry Richardson, who resigned last week to take a position with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brown, a standout safety at UM from 1988-91, had spent the previous two seasons on coach Al Golden’s staff as the senior football operations coordinator and was responsible for community outreach and recruiting matters among other administrative duties.

Before joining Golden’s staff, Brown worked as an assistant coaching defensive backs at FIU (2001-06) and Louisiana-Lafayette (2007-11).

The Hurricanes will have a revamped staff on the offensive side next season. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch left in January to become offensive coordinator of the Jaguars and was replaced by James Coley, who had served in a similar capacity at Florida State.

UM receivers coach George McDonald also left last month to take the same position at Arkansas. McDonald resigned shortly after starting his Arkansas gig to become offensive coordinator at Syracuse.

Brennan Carroll, who coached UM’s tight ends the past two seasons, was shifted to receivers coach following McDonald’s departure. Mario Cristobal was brought in to serve as an associate head coach and tight ends coach.

The only UM offensive assistant who will retain the same duties that he had last season is offensive line coach Art Kehoe.
