Jack Taylor, a 5-foot-10 guard for Division III Grinnell (Iowa) College, is back at, shooting and scoring in college basketball as an unprecedented level.
Sunday, he scored 109 points, shooting 24-for-48 on 3-pointers, in a 173-123 victory against Crossroads. He was 35 of 70 from the field and made 15 of 17 free throws.
This followed a 71-point effort on Friday night in the season opener for Grinnell against Finlandia. He is averaging 90 points per game.
Grinnell uses a fast pace, relying on 3-pointers, full-court pressure and constant substitution.
Almost a year ago, on Nov. 20, 2012, the Black River Falls, Wis., resident, set an NCAA record for any level by scoring 138 in a 179-104 victory against Faith Baptist Bible. He then sustained a broken arm that kept him out much of last season.
“Just like last year, I couldn’t have done this without my teammates,” Taylor said. “I give so much credit to them. This truly was a team effort. I’m thankful for the program and the people I have playing with me.”
The only other player to score more than 109 in an NCAA game was Rio Grande’s Clarence “Bevo” Francis, who had 113 against Hillsdale in 1954.
Here’s a list of the top 5 scoring efforts in NCAA Division III men’s basketball history:
