Bryan Radziewski strikes out 16, lifts Miami to 2-0 win over Virginia Tech

Junior left-hander Bryan Radziewski struck out 16 and pitched a two-hitter to lift the University of Miami baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday night in Coral Gables.

The 16 strikeouts tied for the sixth-highest total in Hurricanes history and were the most by a UM pitcher since Joe Grahe struck out 18 in a win over Maine on March 17, 1989.

Radziewski, who walked one and hit a batter, improved to 3-0 on the season. He allowed a double to the Hokies’ Gary Schneider on his first pitch of the night but then cruised, retiring 19 consecutive batters at one point.

Every Virginia Tech hitter struck out at least once against Radziewski, and six struck out against him at least twice.

Freshman Christopher Barr had an RBI triple in the fifth, and the Hurricanes (19-7, 4-4 ACC) added a run on an error in the seventh.

Devin Burke (5-1) took the loss for Virginia Tech, allowing two runs — one earned — and six hits in seven innings.

Miami has won four straight games, including the first two of its series against Virginia Tech (17-7, 4-4), which is ranked No. 24 in the nation by Baseball America. The series finale is schedule for 1 p.m. Sunday.

Vanderbilt 6, Florida 1: Sophomore right-hander Tyler Beede (6-0) threw 6 1/3 shutout innings as the host Commodores (20-4, 4-1 SEC) defeated the Gators (11-13, 2-3) to even the series at one game apiece.

Conrad Gregor was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles to lead the No. 2 Commodores’ 15-hit offensive attack.

Freshman Brady Roberson, who played at Palm Beach Central High School, delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth for the Gators.

Florida Atlantic 2-10, Arkansas State 3-5: Nathan Pittman, Mark Nelson and Tyler Rocklein all homered to help the visiting Owls (4-9, 3-2 Sun Belt) earn a doubleheader split against the Red Wolves (16-8, 4-1) with a 10-5 victory in the second game.

Pittman’s homer led off the game, and Nelson’s blast, a two-run shot later in the first inning, was his team-high fifth of the season. The Owls scored six runs in the first.

In the first game, Arkansas State’s Alex Potts hit a home run with two outs in the 10th inning off reliever Kevin Alexander (2-2) to give the Red Wolves a 3-2 victory.

Central Florida 6, Alabama-Birmingham 1: Chris Matulis (2-0) allowed an unearned run and five hits in eight innings to lift the visiting Knights (16-9, 2-0 Conference USA) over the Blazers (9-13, 0-2).

Matulis, a senior left-hander who played at Park Vista High School, struck out five and walked three. Austin Johnston hit a two-run homer for UCF.

Palm Beach Atlantic 2-12, Saint Leo 4-7: Junior first baseman A.J. Steimel went 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs as the host Sailfish (17-10) split a doubleheader by winning the second game 12-7 over the Lions (20-10).

In the first game, Saint Leo won 4-2 behind a complete game from left-hander Rick Teasley (3-2).
