Three days after he announced his commitment to Georgia, forward Cameron Forte of Phoenix, Ariz.., signed a scholarship with the Bulldogs.
Forte is a 6-foot-7, high-scoring wing player from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. He will have three years of eligibility at UGA.
“We are very excited to add someone of Cameron’s abilities to our program this spring,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said. “He’s a versatile player who has a real knack for scoring the basketball. Those two things — his versatility and his scoring — should really help our team next season.”
Georgia hopes Forte can help replace some of the scoring lost with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s decision to enter the NBA draft as a sophomore. Forte averaged a team-best 22.5 points a game for Howard, which went 30-7 and reached the quarterfinals of the national junior college tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. That average ranked fourth nationally among all Division I junior college players. Forte also averaged 7.5 rebounds and shot 63 percent from the field during his only season with the Hawks. He averaged 36.2 points and 12.7 rebounds as a senior at McClintock High in Tempe, Ariz.
Forte originally signed with Texas Tech out of Tempe, Arizona’s McClintock High School. But he redshirted his only season before transferring to Howard. He chose Georgia over Washington State, Minnesota, Pitt, Long Beach State, Colorado State and Ole Miss.
“It was a nice place with nice facilities and I got along with the team real well,” said Forte, who visited UGA April 12-14. “The coaching staff is great and seemed real nice. I made my decision basically on going to a place where I felt comfortable with the coaches and players and where I had a chance to play, and that’s basically what it came down to.”
Forte is the fourth signee of UGA’s 2013 class and the second to sign in the spring signing period, which began Wednesday and continues until May 15. He joins Kenny Paul Geno, a 6-6 forward from Booneville, Miss., who signed with the Bulldogs last week, J.J. Frazier, a 5-10 guard from Glennville, and Juwan Parker, a 6-5 guard from Tulsa, Okla.
