It was all right there in front of Kyle Korver.
Following a Hawks steal, the shooting guard dribbled down the court with a clear path to the basket.
Turns out it was what was behind him that was cause for pause.
Korver turned in a highlight-reel play by making a mid-air, behind-the-back pass to DeMarre Carroll for an easy layup. It gave the Hawks a 10-point lead on their way to a 120-89 win over the Wizards Sunday.
What was going through Korver’s mind on the break?
“Well, I was thinking out trying to dunk it,” he said. “Then I saw John Wall and I’ve seen too many highlights of him getting blocks from behind. This is just one of those things where I was up in the air, it wasn’t for very long, but it was long enough to know I wasn’t going to get the dunk. I saw DeMarre and flipped it around my back. I hope it looked good.”
Carroll said he anticipated the pass as part of the unselfish play of the Hawks.
“We all understand not to give up on a play,” Carroll said. “If somebody has a fast break you still don’t give up on it. We know how to pass the ball. We understand where each other is going to be.”
Antic chips in
Pero Antic scored 12 points off the bench for the Hawks. The center finished 3 of 5 from the 3-point range, just one of eight Hawks to score from long range.
It was a first-quarter 3-pointer that left heads shaking. Well, one in particular.
Antic was fronted by Wizards center Marcin Gortat by the 3-point line. After several head fakes and jab steps, Antic just let one go from behind the arc.
Splash.
Gortat stood, looked upward and repeatedly shook his head in disbelief.
Antic said he knows Gortat for playing internationally.
“He came to me like ‘You’re my friend. You are going to go face-to-face and make a 3?’” Antic said. “That’s what I do all my career. What do you want me to do?”
Add Schroder to the mix
In a game with several remarkable shots, Dennis Schroder hit one that had the Philips Arena crowd on its feet.
With a victory well in hand, Schroder got the ball late in the shot clock with 1:18 remaining. He launched a 3-pointer but immediately turned and walked down court. The guard never saw the ball hit nothing but net, the final points in the Hawks victory. And a crowd pleaser.
