Kyle Korver will have surgery on his right ankle Wednesday afternoon in New York City, according to Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer.
The guard had previously been ruled out for the remainder of the postseason due to a severe high right ankle sprain suffered in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cavaliers on Friday. While an X-ray done Friday was negative, Korver had an MRI and follow-up examination Saturday which confirmed the diagnosis. While surgery was always a possibility, the Hawks said Korver would get a second opinion from a foot and ankle specialist.
TNT’s David Aldridge first reported that Korver told him he would have surgery late Tuesday afternoon before Game 4.
“Kyle went to New York, got a second opinion, additional tests, additional information and it’s been determined he’ll need surgery,” Budenholzer said. “He is scheduled for surgery. This was always part of the original timeline. There was some hope that surgery would not be required. With additional information, with additional testing, he’ll need surgery to get him back to where we want him. We all want what’s best for Kyle. We look forward to having him back.”
Budenholzer gave no details about the procedure. He would not say whether Korver suffered ligament or cartilage damage. Budenholzer also offered no timetable for a return.
Korver was injured in the third quarter of Game 2 when his ankle was caught under Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova scrambling for a loose ball. He immediately limped to the locker room.
Dellavedova got tangled with the legs of Al Horford in Game 3 Sunday that resulted in the Hawks center’s ejection. Following the game, while addressing the history of Dellavedova, DeMarre Carroll said Korver would require surgery and would miss 4 to 6 weeks. Following those comments, the Hawks said a determination on whether surgery would be necessary had yet to be made because Korver was still awaiting the second opinion. The second opinion came Tuesday.
