The NBA Development League playoffs began Tuesday night, and two Hawks rookies were on the losing end of a series-opening game. Lamar Patterson and Edy Tavares continued their assignment for the Austin Spurs in a 136-133 overtime loss at the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Patterson, the guard/forward, came off the bench to contribute 11 points, four assists and three rebounds in 25 minutes.

Tavares, the center, battled foul trouble and had six points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes as a starter.

The best-of-three series moves to Austin for the Game 2 at 8:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday and Game 3, if necessary, at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
