Duane Ferrell was let go by the Hawks organization last week as the team ended its working relationship with their former player, according to several people familiar with the situation.
Ferrell served as the player relations and programs manager in the basketball operations department until 2014 for the Hawks, the team he played with for six NBA seasons after starring at Georgia Tech. He then moved into a role with the team’s alumni association. Ferrell also served as the pregame and postgame analyst for the Hawks Radio Network, including their flagship station 92.9 FM, last season. Ferrell was let go by the Hawks and not the radio station, according to several people familiar with the situation.
Ferrell could not be reached for comment. He did not return a phone message.
There was no immediate word on who will replace Ferrell on the radio broadcasts next season.
Ferrell played at Tech from 1984-88 and was the ACC Rookie of the Year. When he left the school, he was the all-time leader in games played and victories.
After going undrafted, Ferrell played in the Continental Basketball Association before joining the Hawks as a shooting guard/small forward in 1988. He averaged 7.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 353 games with the franchise. He also played for the Pacers and Warriors before retiring from the NBA in 1999. He also worked in the player development with the Wizards from 2001-04. He re-joined the Hawks organization in 2008.
