The Hawks confirmed that forward Mike Scott has a fracture of a bone in his left big toe and will likely be sidelined for several weeks.
Scott will return to Atlanta to been seen by a team doctors at Peachtree Orthopaedics on Monday before a better timeline for his return is determined and announced. The forward could be out until the playoffs.
Scott was injured in Wednesday’s loss to the Nuggets. The team originally diagnosed the injury as a sprain. However, Scott underwent an MRI exam on Friday morning at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Phoenix and the fracture was revealed. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported before Friday’s win over the Suns that the injury was a broken toe.
Scott appeared in 60 games and averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 15.8 minutes. He missed only two games this season before the toe injury – one for a back contusion and one for the flu.
The 2013 second-round pick out of Virginia has been a valuable player of the bench for the Hawks during his three seasons. He had a memorable Game 5 game against the Pacers in the playoffs last season.
With the injury to Scott, the Hawks will sign Austin Daye to a 10-day contract on Sunday, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The team did not re-sign guard Jarell Eddie to a second 10-day contract with the new need for help in the frontcourt.
Daye, a 2009 first-round pick of the Pistons, has been playing for Erie of the NBA Development League. The 6-foot-11, 220 pound forward averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 28.5 minutes in 10 games. Daye scored 17 points for Erie in a win over Westchester Friday.
In addition to the Pistons, Daye has played for the Grizzlies, Raptors and Spurs and totaled 285 NBA games. He averaged 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds. He was part of the Spurs NBA Championship in 2014, playing a total of six minutes. He played collegiately at Gonzaga and is the son of former NBA player Darren Daye.
The Hawks did not practice Saturday. The team was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles for Sunday’s game against the Lakers.
