The Hawks claimed Nicolas Brussino off waivers Saturday. The guard/forward was waived by the Mavericks on Thursday. The Hawks were looking to add another wing to the roster and saw Brussino as a fit by being a young player with upside they can work with as a project.
The 6-foot-8 Brussino appeared in 54 games with the Mavericks last season as a rookie. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 9.6 minutes. Brussino, a native of Argentina, also played in five games in the NBA G League with the Texas Legends, where he averaged 16.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 35.8 minutes. He had a .628 field-goal percentage, including .520 from 3-point range, during the stint.
Brussino, 24, played for the Mavericks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League earlier this month. In six games, he averaged 8.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals in 20.7 minutes. He shot .413 (19 of 46).
Brussino has been described as a smart player and a good shooter who needs to get stronger. Between games in the NBA, G League and Las Vegas Summer League, he shot nearly 40 percent from 3-point range.
Brussino has two years remaining on his contract. He is scheduled to earn $1,312,611 next season, and his salary of $1,544,951 for 2018-19 in not guaranteed.
Brussino also has played professionally in Argentina with Penarol (2015-16) and Regatas Corrientes (2012-15). He has been a member of Argentina’s National Team since 2012 and played in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero.
The Hawks likely will add only a third point guard moving forward.
