Yante Maten, the former Georgia men’s basketball player, was named the NBA G League Player of the Month for December, the league announced.
Maten, a two-way player for the Heat, started all nine games for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the month. The power forward averaged 29.2 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 blocks while shooting .590 from the field. Maten’s shooting percentage included .474 from 3-point range. He also had seven double-doubles. Maten had a 42-point, 14-rebound game in a win over the Stockton Kings on Dec. 2.
In total, Maten has appeared in 20 games for the Skyforce this season and has averaged a team-high 27.0 points and 10.5 rebound.
Maten signed a two-way contract with the Heat in July after he went unselected in the NBA draft.
Maten, the SEC Player of the Year last season, had a strong showing as part of Heat entries in the Sacramento and Las Vegas Summer Leagues.
On a two-way deal, Maten can play up to 45 days in the NBA.
At Georgia, Maten played four years and appeared in 128 games. He averaged 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds in his tenure. Maten ended his career ranked second on the school’s all-time list in points (1,886), third in blocks (198), fourth in rebounds (889) and free throws made (518) and sixth in field goals (655). As a senior, he averaged 19.3 points and 8.6 rebounds in 33 games.
