Dream forward Angel McCoughtry will make her second all-star appearance when the 2013 WNBA All-Star Game is held at 3:30 p.m. July 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The starters were announced during the WNBA televised game on Thursday night.
McCoughtry, the 2009 WNBA Rookie of the Year, joins overall top vote-getter Elena Delle Donne on the East squad. Delle Donne, a rookie, led all players with 35,646 votes. Fellow rookie Brittney Griner, with 22,185 votes, made the West squad. Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx, a former Collins Hill High School star in Gwinnett County, will start for the West team along with Griner.
McCoughtry leads the WNBA in steals (3.5), ranks second in scoring (20.2 ppg), fifth in assists (5) and 20th in rebounding (5.7), and has led the Dream (10-4) to their best start in franchise history. She was selected the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for June after winning the conference Player of the Week award three times in the season’s first four weeks.
A former No. 1 pick from Louisville in 2009, McCoughtry led the WNBA in scoring and steals in 2012, averaging 21.4 points and 2.5 steals per game while helping the Dream to their fourth consecutive playoff appearance. She also was the second-leading scorer for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold medal in London.
Joining Delle Donne and McCoughtry in the Eastern Conference starting lineup are five-time All-Star guard Cappie Pondexter of the New York Liberty, two-time All-Star guard Epiphanny Prince of the Sky and forward Tamika Catchings.
The Western Conference lineup will feature five No. 1 overall draft picks, including Candace Parker, the overall top vote getter for the West squad, as well as Diana Taurasi and Seimone Augustus, Parker and Moore.
The 12 WNBA coaches will select the reserves and they will be announced next Tuesday.
