Al Horford is going home.
The Hawks center will take part in another Basketball Without Borders event – this one in the Dominican Republic later this month. Horford will be joined by his father Tito Horford along with fellow NBA players Charlie Villanueva of the Mavericks and Corey Brewer of the Rockets Aug. 16-19 in Santo Domingo.
Hawks assistant coach Darvin Ham will also take part in the event along with former NBA players Luc Mbah a Moute, Francisco Garcia and Felipe Lopez and NBA assistants Melvin Hunt of the Mavericks, Brett Gunning of the Rockets and Nick U’ren of the Warriors.
“I’m very excited and grateful to be a part of BWB in Dominican,” Horford told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “There’s a lot of interest in basketball and I look forward to making a difference in the community and helping develop the game of basketball.”
The group will lead 51 campers from 18 North and South American countries. Basketball Without Borders is co-operated by the NBA and FIBA. The organizations describe the effort as a global basketball development and community outreach program that unites young basketball players to promote the sport and encourage positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness. Camps were held this year in Johannesburg, South Africa in July and Gran Canaria, Spain in June. Twenty-two former BWB campers were on NBA rosters last season, including All-Star Marc Gasol of the Grizzlies.
It’s the fifth Basketball Without Borders trip for Horford. He also went to Rome last year, South Africa in 2013, Singapore in 2009 and Mexico City in 2008.
