Kevin Gausman and the Braves seek a series win in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.
Here’s what to know about the Braves before they begin play at 7:10 p.m., leading the National League East by one game over the Phillies.
1. The Braves captured their first shutout in Pittsburgh since 2012 on Monday night. They haven't had much luck in the Steel City, losing nine of their past 12 here.
Since a two-game sweep in 2011, the Braves have one series win in Pittsburgh. They’ve lost five of six series, including a sweep last season.
2. Bryse Wilson was the star of Monday night. The 20-year-old was thrust into his major league debut and pitched five scoreless innings at PNC Park.
Wilson became the fourth Braves starter to win his debut this year, along with Mike Soroka, Kolby Allard and Touki Toussaint. They’re the second team in 110 seasons to have four rookies win their debut, joining the 2009 Orioles.
3. The Braves doubled four times Monday, bringing their National-League high to 256. They have the top two individuals in that category: Nick Markakis leads the NL with 37 two-baggers, with MVP favorite Freddie Freeman trailing him by a pair.
They’re on pace for 334 team doubles, which would exceed the franchise record 328 achieved in 2007. Hugh Duffy owns the individual record with 51 in 1894, while Marcus Giles owns the Atlanta-era record with 49 in 2003. Markakis is on pace for 48.
4. Johan Camargo has been nails with runners in scoring position. He didn't have an opportunity to improve on his results Monday, with Ronald Acuna getting thrown out trying to steal third during Camargo's at-bat.
But the Braves’ third baseman has made the most of RBI chances, hence why he leads the team in that department since June 1. He’s hitting .337 (29-for-86) with a .431 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position. He’s posted a .320 mark with a .443 on-base percentage in such situations with two outs.
5. The Braves are road warriors. They're 35-27 away from home, the second-best road mark in the NL (Arizona, 37-27). The Braves haven't had a winning road record since 2012, when they posted 46 wins.
On that note, the Braves are just four wins away from exceeded last year’s 72 wins. They’re 12-8 through 20 games in August, already more wins than July brought (10-13).
