Manager Kirk Gibson said C Miguel Montero will play less over the course of the season, spelled more often by Tuffy Gosewich. … Pitcher Daniel Hudson (second Tommy John surgery) is pitching one inning in rehab outings and could pitch an inning in the majors in September. … SS Chris Owings (left shoulder) took groundballs during infield practice last week and could be back by Sept. 1.
Dodgers
Carl Crawford was three for four with two runs batted in and a run scored in a recent game. This was the kind of performance manager Don Mattingly envisioned when he explained why Crawford, and not Andre Ethier, was the team’s first-choice left fielder. “Carl, before he got hurt, was probably swinging the bat better than anyone we had,” Mattingly said. “I feel like Carl’s going to get back to that.” When Crawford (sprained left ankle) was placed on the DL on May 28, he was batting .267 with four HRs, 18 RBIs and nine steals in 44 games.
Giants
The team recalled 1B Adam Duvall. He was among the Pacific Coast League leaders with 26 HRs, 84 RBIs and a .596 slugging percentage at the time of the promotion. He was batting .296 in 86 games. In 12 games with the Giants earlier this season, Duvall hit .200 with two HRs and three RBIs, but struck out 13 times in 40 at-bats.
Padres
The Padres called up one of their top prospects, OF Rymer Liriano, in the first major move by new general manager A.J. Preller. The move had been in the works within the organization in the weeks before Preller was hired. Liriano hit.452 (28 for 62) with 16 extra-base hits and 13 RBIs in 16 games with Triple-A El Paso. The 23-year-old Liriano is the first player from San Diego’s Dominican Republic academy, which opened in 2008, to be called up by the Padres. “I feel proud to be the first guy,” Liriano said through translator Jose Valentin, the 1B coach. “I want to thank the Padres to do that academy to try to help not only me but more Dominican players and hopefully I will be an example for those guys.” He originally signed as a non-drafted free agent at age 16.
Rockies
OF Carlos Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day DL with left knee tendinitis and a sprained right ankle. It is his second trip to the DL this season after inflammation in his left index finger sidelined the slugger for five weeks. “You can see mental stress on him, you can see physical stress,” trainer Keith Dugger said. “He made the decision to take time off, so that’s where we are right now. We’re going to get that ankle right. We know he’s got tendinitis, we’ve been dealing with it. We know it isn’t going away overnight or even in a week.”
