Diamondbacks

Trevor Cahill was designated for assignment, a move that could send the struggling right-hander to the minors. Cahill, acquired in a trade with Oakland in 2012, had lost his job in the rotation after a series of bad outings then struggled in a bullpen role. Cahill, 1-6 with a 5.66 ERA, had his best years with Oakland. In 2010, he was 18-8 for the A’s with a 2.97 ERA. “After everything that’s happened, I still believe I can come back and be a starter and help this team win,” the 26-year-old Cahill said. “I mean, they’ve been nothing but supportive and I can’t ask for anything more.”

Dodgers

Catcher A.J. Ellis ran the bases as part of a pregame workout, another step forward in his recovery from a sprained ankle. “He felt good about the base running, felt good about everything,” manager Don Mattingly told the Orange County Register (Santa Ana, Calif.). “It sounds like he’s encouraged.” … Josh Beckett (4-3) pitched six scoreless innings for a victory last week, giving up two hits and striking out seven. His pitch counts in the three starts since his 128-pitch no-hitter: 88, 99, 90. Beckett also executed a perfect Punch-and-Judy maneuver, pulling back his bat from an apparent bunt attempt to chop a single into left field, a pivotal hit in the Dodgers’ three-run fifth inning, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Giants

Brandon Belt took grounders last week. The Giants still hope to have Belt (broken left thumb) back in the lineup in early July, according to the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News. … Madison Bumgarner (8-4), the tall left-hander with the deceptive fastball was selected NL player of the month for May after going 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Before losing Tuesday to the Nationals, his last defeat was April 28 against San Diego. … A right shin contusion kept CF Angel Pagan out of the starting lineup for a few games last week.

Padres

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was selected by the Padres in the 28th round of the draft last week — the 837th player taken. Manziel was listed as a shortstop for Texas A&M, although he never played for the Aggies as he focused on football. … The Padres lost for only the 11th time last week when having a lead at any point in a game. That’s the third-fewest total in the majors.

Rockies

Christian Bergman was the fourth Rockies pitcher to make his major league debut this season. The others were Eddie Butler, Chris Martin and Tommy Kahnle. “Overall it went pretty well. It’s good to get the first one out of the way,” Bergman said. “The first two innings the nerves were there. I was able to overcome that and settle in the last two innings. The only thing that would have made it better is if we came out with a win.” … OF Carlos Gonzalez had a small tumor removed from his left index finger. The procedure was performed in Cleveland.
