OF Cody Ross went swimming in a pool, but is still a ways off, manager Kirk Gibson said. Ross has been on the DL since July 22 with a left calf injury. … Mark Trumbo played his 500th career game last week. … OF A.J. Pollock, out since June 1 with a broken right hand, was 0 for 5 in his first game with Triple-A Reno. He was 1 for 3 in two games with Arizona’s rookie league team.
Dodgers
LHP Paul Maholm, 32, was placed on the 15-day DL because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which will sideline him for the rest of the season. The 10-year veteran, who signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Dodgers in February, is 1-5 with a 4.84 ERA in 30 appearances — including eight starts. … Clayton Kershaw recovered from a rocky start to pitch seven innings of seven-hit ball, but he gave up three early runs to the Angels’ resourceful lineup. The two-time Cy Young winner didn’t get a win for just the second time in 12 starts since May. “It was a struggle at first, (and) I really don’t know why,” Kershaw said. “I was just missing. They’re a great team, and they’re going to hit mistakes. And sometimes they’re going to hit pitches that aren’t mistakes.”
Giants
Starting pitching has been the Giants’ recipe for success recently, but that plan has faltered this season. Matt Cain, who will have season-ending elbow surgery, pitched poorly before the injury, and Tim Lincecum continues to struggle despite throwing a no-hitter. The team traded for Jake Peavy to ease the burden on the de facto ace, Madison Bumgarner. … Gerardo Parra’s home run for teh Brewers on Tuesday off Jean Machi snapped a streak of 23 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings by the Giants bullpen. “(Machi) just left that pitch up,” manager Bruce Bochy said.
Padres
Assistant general manager A.J. Hinch left the team in order to look for another job in baseball. The move has been expected ever since he told club executives July 11 that he was taking himself out of consideration to replace fired GM Josh Byrnes. Hinch helped run the baseball operations department after Byrnes was fired. The Padres made a handful of trades, including moving third baseman Chase Headley and closer Huston Street.
Rockies
Brett Anderson’s outing Tuesday was the 20th consecutive start by a left-hander for Colorado. Only the 1982 Kansas City Royals have started consecutive lefthanders for 20 straight games in the last 100 years. The streak ended with right-hander Jordan Lyles’ start Wednesday. Lyles returned to the rotation after missing two months with a fractured left hand. Lyles, acquired in an offseason trade with Houston, was pitching effectively before suffering the injury on a comebacker against Arizona on June 4.
