Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino exited Friday’s 11-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies with a right side injury.
The injury happened in the ninth inning, after he threw just three pitches.
“You hate to see those whether it is a hitter or pitcher,” Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. “You get a little better feel of it tomorrow (Saturday) and we will decide what we are going to do.”
Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski noticed the injury right away and motioned for the Braves training staff to check on the 25-year-old. Braves assistant trainer Jim Lovell came out and took Vizcaino back to the locker room for further examination.
After the game, Snitker said that the he was fine in warmups and that the injury just happened after he threw a pitch on the mound.
“It wasn’t a result of anything as it was just bad luck,” Snitker said. “He just threw a pitch and it went. It just happens as it is one of those things.”
Vizcaino will evaluated on Saturday. He is the latest Braves player to be sidelined with an injury. Earlier on Friday, the Braves sent Tyler Flowers to the 15-day disabled list with a right hand fracture.
This is the second injury in as many weeks for Vizcaino. He wasn’t available for the team’s recent series against the Chicago White Sox due to a topical infection on his right elbow.
Snitker said he had made progress from the infection. With the side injury, there is no official timetable on how long he could be out.
In 38 relief appearances, Vizcaino had a 2.75 ERA with 10 saves and 47 strikeouts. Those numbers increased after Friday’s game.
He was charged with two runs (one earned) and one walk. However, the Braves are more concerned about his health.
“It’s a tough thing as those injuries are hard to come back from,” Snitker said.
