The Braves’ Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley appear to be making progress toward returning to action from injuries.
Swanson "did exactly what the training staff wanted him to do" Tuesday, Braves manager Brian Snitker said, "and will kind of accelerate the process tomorrow." Sidelined since July 23 with a badly bruised right heel, Swanson fielded ground balls on the SunTrust Park infield and hit indoors Tuesday. If progress continues, he could play rehabilitation games in the minor leagues soon.
Riley, sidelined since Aug. 7 with a partially torn ligament in his right knee, is "amping up," Snitker said. "By the end of the week, I'm hoping he can go out (on a rehab assignment) and play."
One Brave who won’t return to action this season is relief pitcher Jacob Webb, who was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday with a right elbow impingement. The elbow injury sent Webb, an important part of the Braves’ bullpen earlier this season, to the 10-day injured list in mid-July. He was activated early this month and optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, but the Braves now have shelved him for the season.
“His elbow still isn’t right,” Snitker said. “You could tell something wasn’t right by the results he was getting in Triple-A. So (doctors) will look at him further and re-evaluate him, and if something needs to be done or whatever, then they’ll get it done now. Hopefully by shutting him down this year, he’ll be ready to go for spring training.”
