One week after Dansby Swanson left a game with a sore left wrist, there’s no timetable yet for the Braves shortstop’s return from the 10-day disabled list.
Swanson initially was expected to miss only a day or two after leaving a May 2 game at New York with a sore wrist. But two days later the Braves placed him on the DL with inflammation in the wrist, which he said occurred not from any specific incident.
Swanson stayed in Atlanta to rest and work with team physical therapists while the Braves are on a seven-game trip that ends Monday with a makeup game at Chicago against the Cubs.
“I don’t know when to expect him back,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said before Wednesday’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field. “He’s not doing baseball stuff yet, really. He’s throwing, he’s tracking balls, but he hasn’t swung the bat or even played catch where he catches (throws himself). They’re getting everything quieted down. So again, he’s just going to be a day-to-day thing.”
Swanson was 8-for-43 (.186) with no extra-base hits, one RBI, 16 strikeouts and a .441 OPS in his last 11 games before going on the DL, after batting .352 (25-for-71) with 11 extra-base hits, 12 RBIs, 16 strikeouts and a .964 OPS in his first 17 games.
Johan Camargo, who’s filled in at shortstop since Swanson left the May 2 game, was 2-for-18 with a homer and five walks in that span before Wednesday, when he made his sixth consecutive start at shortstop.
Camargo has played solid defense and had a outstanding play to quickly catch and fire to first base to complete a crucial double play in Tuesday’s 1-0 win against the Rays.
