On July 13, 1996, John Smoltz pitched a two-hit shutout in the Braves' 2-0 victory over the Marlins, the 15th win in a 24-win NL Cy Young Award season for the Hall of Fame righthander.
Smoltz struck out 10 and walked three while adding a hit and a RBI. Javy Lopez had a two-run homer for the Braves.
Smoltz would finish the season at 24-8 with a 2.94 ERA as the Braves won the NL pennant for the second straight year. The Braves fell to the Yankees four games to two in the World Series.
