Andrelton Simmons had to leave Tuesday night’s game with a sore right ankle, something manager Fredi Gonzalez said has been bothering his young shortstop on and off for a couple of weeks.
He is considered day-to-day with ankle inflammation.
Simmons said it’s something that’s been nagging him lately but that he didn’t consider it that serious. The ankle flared up again when he was in the field in the seventh inning. When it wouldn’t stop bothering him in the dugout before the Braves took the field in the eighth, he and Gonzalez decided it was best to take him out.
Ramiro Pena moved from second base to shortstop and Dan Uggla entered the game at second.
“It started nagging me a little bit during the inning,” Simmons said. “Then it wouldn’t go away. I tried playing on but just didn’t feel like I was going to help my team. I was going to hurt them more if I stayed in there.”
Simmons received some treatment during the game and was hoping by taking anti-inflammatories he would be ready to play again as early as Wednesday in Boston.
“Hopefully (I’m) ready to go tomorrow,” Simmons said after Tuesday night’s game. “It’s not like a nine out of 10 pain. It’s not a terrible pain. It’s just a nagging thing, so hopefully it stops nagging.”
