A power outage at Turner Field briefly knocked out the stadium lights and extended a third-inning rain delay by about 20 minutes Tuesday night during the Braves’ game against the Minnesota Twins.
About 40 minutes into the rain delay, the power went out stadium-wide for just a second or two. But large banks of lights atop the stadium, which serve to light the baseball field, didn’t come back on immediately. And after they did, some individual lights in each bank flickered out again.
Braves starting pitcher Tim Hudson had returned to the field to warm up for an announced 8:55 p.m. expected re-start, but that was delayed when umpires determined there wasn’t enough light. After Hudson and manager Fredi Gonzalez discussed the situation with the umpiring crew, Hudson and catcher Brian McCann returned to the Braves dugout.
Hudson returned to the field about 10 minutes later, after the lights had been fully restored. This time he warmed up for another five minutes as the grounds crew prepared the field, before the rest of the Braves returned to the field. The game was re-started at 9:14 p.m., with the Braves ahead 2-1.
The Twins had a runner at first base with one out in the top of the third inning when the delay began. When play resumed, Josh Willingham and Justin Morneau each singled to tie the score, 2-all.
