Matt Wisler, RHP, Triple-A Gwinnett
Ranking: Braves’ No. 1 prospect by Baseball America
Wisler ran into early trouble in his last outing against Norfolk, giving up a two-run homer in the first inning and another two runs, including an RBI single by former Brave Paul Janish, in the third. But he kept his composure and pitched six innings, his longest outing in three starts with Gwinnett. His six strikeouts were also a season high.
Jose Peraza, 2B, Triple-A Gwinnett
Ranking: Braves’ No. 2 prospect by Baseball America
Peraza put together a six-game hitting streak that ended in the second game of a doubleheader in Durham on Sunday. Over that time he went 11-for-25 (.440) to raise his season average from .195 to .288. He struck out only three times over those 25 at-bats and stole four bases.
Mike Foltynewicz, RHP, Triple-A Gwinnett
Ranking: Braves’ No. 3 prospect by Baseball America
Foltynewicz struck out nine batters for the second straight outing, this time in five innings against Durham on Sunday (as opposed to eight innings against Norfolk on April 20.) He gave up two earned runs — his highest tally yet, which is saying something — and threw 61 of his 93 pitches for strikes. The G-Braves scored their first run for him in his 21 1/3 innings on the mound but still managed only two runs in a 4-2 loss. Foltynewicz fell to 0-3 despite a 2.08 ERA.
Lucas Sims, RHP, high Single-A Carolina
Ranking: Braves’ No. 5 prospect by Baseball America
After a strong start in his return to high-A ball this season, Sims has had a couple of rough outings for the Mudcats. He’s given up nine earned runs in six innings over his past two starts, while failing to get past the third and fourth innings respectively. He’s walked seven and struck out eight in those two games.
Jason Hursh RHP, Double-A Mississippi
Ranking: Braves’ No. 7 prospect by Baseball America
After several rough starts to begin his second season with Double-A Mississippi, Hursh put up his best numbers of the year on Saturday in Mobile. The Braves’ 2013 first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State limited the Bay Bears to two earned runs in six innings, allowing one home run. He told Mississippi broadcaster Kyle Tait afterward that he’s had a good feel for his changeup all along but the rest of his repertoire felt better this time out.
Tyrell Jenkins, RHP, Double-A Mississippi
Ranking: Braves’ No. 13 prospect by Baseball America
Jenkins collected his first win in the Braves organization by pitching five shutout innings against Chattanooga on April 21, allowing only one hit. He made a quality start his next time out against Mobile (three runs in six innings) and is now 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA through four starts.
Braxton Davidson, LF, low Single-A Rome
Ranking: Braves’ No. 12 prospect by Baseball America
Davidson hit his second home run of the year Saturday against Augusta with a blast to right field. It was his first home run since his opposite field shot to left on opening day for the Rome. It was also his fourth hit in a three-game span, helping to boost his season average over the Mendoza line to .222.
Manny Banuelos, LHP, Triple-A Gwinnett
Ranking: Braves’ No. 14 prospect by Baseball America
Banuelos gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings in his last start April 21 but he notched a win in the 5-4 victory, becoming the first starter in Gwinnett’s rotation to claim a win. The rotation had been winless over the first 11 games. Banuelos was scheduled to start Monday night against his former fellow Yankees farmhands of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The former top Yankees prospect was traded to the Braves for a pair of relievers — David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve.
Mallex Smith, CF, Double-A Mississippi
Ranking: Braves’ No. 17 prospect by Baseball America
After a routine day off Saturday, Smith regrouped from his first back-to-back 0-fers of the year to come back with a two-hit game against Mobile on Sunday. It was the speedy center fielder’s sixth multi-hit game of the year. He’s second in the Southern League with six stolen bases.
Dustin Peterson, 3B, high Single-A Carolina Mudcats
Ranking: Braves’ No. 18 prospect by Baseball America
Peterson, one of four prospects acquired from the Padres in the Justin Upton trade, homered in back-to-back games on last Thursday and Friday. By and large though, it’s been a modest start in the Braves organization; he hit .200 (10-for-50) through his first 15 games.
