How the game was won: Alex Wood walked Gerrit Cole on a close 3-2 pitch with one out in the fifth inning. Four of the next five Pittsburgh Pirates hit singles, knocking in the game's only three runs. Wood was then ejected in between innings for arguing balls and strikes. Wood's line on the afternoon: five innings, seven hits, three earned runs, five strikeouts and a walk.

Atlanta blew a chance to cut into the lead in the sixth when pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Number: 35. The number of runs Atlanta had scored in its five games before getting blanked Sunday. Cole was in control for most of the afternoon, striking out seven and allowing no runs on six hits over seven innings.

What's next: The Braves start a four-game set against the San Diego Padres (29-29). San Diego has gone 8-5 in its past 13 games. Atlanta will send out Shelby Miller (5-2, 1.89 ERA) against Ian Kennedy (3-5, 6.60 ERA). The series will be the return to Atlanta for Justin Upton, Melvin Upton and Craig Kimbrel, all traded to the Padres.
