Infielder Paul Janish suffered a broken nose in a weight-lifting accident on Friday but said it hasn’t prevented him from playing. Janish has yet to appear in the first four games of the Braves division series. He is the only backup infielder on the Braves playoff roster, though Gerald Laird could play third base in a bind.
Janish said he was lifting weights when a 45-pound barbell popped off a squat rack and hit him in the face.
“It was a freak deal,” said Janish, who said he was not paying close attention to how the barbell was situated. “I’ve had some stitches, but it’s not bad. It doesn’t affect anything so long as I don’t get hit in the nose again. It’s just a little uncomfortable. It’s all right.”
Both Janish and outfielder Jordan Schafer have been battling ailments. Schafer has been batting flu-like symptoms throughout the series and has yet to play, though he says he would be OK to go.
