Braves rookie pitcher Mike Foltynewicz was scratched from his scheduled start Monday night against the Marlins due to sickness, and Shelby Miller was moved up a day on short notice to take his place.
The Braves had already planned to use a spot starter Wednesday and make a “bullpen game” of it, using a handful of relievers to get through the game after optioning Williams Perez to Triple-A on Saturday.
Now, they’ll recall Manny Banuelos from Triple-A to start Tuesday and hope to get 3-4 innings out of the rookie left-hander, who excelled in the Braves rotation before going on the disabled list July 28 due to elbow inflammation.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said former Cubs starter Edwin Jackson and Sugar Ray Marimon are candidates for Wednesday’s spot start.
“This afternoon, Folty came in, he had some viral symptoms and a high fever, was sore all over,” Gonzalez said. “So our training staff said, hey, we shouldn’t be pitching this guy. We had to scramble, and luckily, with the off day (last Thursday) we had given everybody an extra day. So Millsey (Miller) goes on his normal day today. We needed a spot starter on Wednesday, now we’re going to need two.
“We’ll figure that out tomorrow. We’ll get through today and see what happens.”
