WASHINGTON – Pitcher Mike Foltynewicz was placed on Triple-A Gwinnett’s temporary inactive list Thursday, but he’s not injured and is expected to make his next scheduled start.
Foltynewicz has been sharp in two starts for Gwinnett, posting a 0.90 ERA and .129 opponents’ batting average in 10 innings. He struck out seven with one walk and two hits allowed in six scoreless innings against Durham on Wednesday.
That performance followed by the move to the temporary inactive list led to some speculation that “Folty” was about to be recalled by the Braves and inserted in the major league rotation. But Braves general manager John Coppolella said that wasn’t the case.
The Braves declined to say why the move was made, but Coppolella said Foltynewicz was expected to make his next scheduled start.
Moves to the minor league temporary inactive list are sometimes made for personal reasons, much like the major-league bereavment list, and teams don’t necessarily elaborate if there’s no injury involved.
Ramirez clears waivers: Also Thursday, the Braves announced that reliever Jose Ramirez cleared waivers and was assigned to Gwinnett.
