RHP Marco Estrada (5-3) was getting used to the home runs. What had him shaking his head after a recent defeat was his pitch selection and the walks. Estrada gave up a grand slam after walking the bases loaded. Estrada: “I don’t understand why I’m walking so many guys right now. I’ve got to figure this out now because it’s getting out of hand.” Estrada has given up a major league-worst 20 HRs this season.

Cardinals

1B Matt Adams (strained left calf) started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis. … Wednesday’s game was the third time that Tampa Bay C Jose Molina and his brother, C Yadier Molina, played against each other in the majors. … Former Cardinals manager and Tampa native Tony La Russa threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the finale of the two-game interleague series in St. Petersburg, Fla. La Russa will be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame on July 27.

Pirates

Josh Harrison made an emergency start at second base in place of Neil Walker, who underwent an appendectomy after experiencing abdominal pain and was placed on the 15-day DL. The Pirates called up coveted OF prospect Gregory Polanco to fill Walker’s roster spot. … RHP Gerrit Cole threw 25 soft-toss pitches on flat ground. Cole, who leads the team with six victories, was placed on the DL with what the team called right shoulder fatigue.

Reds

Joey Votto, activated from the 15-day DL after missing 23 games with a strained quadriceps in his left knee, went 1 for 3 with a single, two strikeouts and a walk in his first game back. … Former manager and the All-time hits king Pete Rose is going to manage one game for the Bridgeport Bluefish in the independent Atlantic League in Bridgeport, Conn. The 73-year-old Rose will run the Connecticut team Monday vs. the host Lancaster Barnstormers.
