Cubs
A 100-loss season has become a possibility for the Cubs. But with Arismendy Alcantara providing a spark and Kyle Hendricks receiving an opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation, slugger Anthony Rizzo says the entire farm system should take notice. “It’s an opportunity for guys to step up,” Rizzo told the Chicago Tribune. “Our whole organization should be loving where we’re at, because even guys in high A and Double A should see there’s so much opportunity in our organization right now to step up and become someone who can make a name for themselves.”
Brewers

WTAE television in Pittsburgh: “A 12-year-old Colorado boy is the newest member of the Pirates after his Make-A-Wish came true. Colorado native Matthew Beichner signed a one-day contract with the Pirates, but not before enjoying a picnic in center field with his hero, Andrew McCutchen. Beichner was diagnosed with germinoma, a type of brain tumor. His one and only wish was to meet McCutchen. What he didn’t expect was a day full of activities, fun and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.”
Reds
GM Walt Jocketty said he would like to add a bat before Thursday’s trade deadline. His preference would be someone who can play multiple positions. “Eventually we’re going to get Joey Votto (quad) and Brandon (thumb) back, so you don’t want to limit yourself,” Jocketty said. From BleacherReport.com: “Cincinnati doesn’t have the payroll flexibility to make a major move unless it trades away a key player. At this point, the Reds are still in contention, so don’t expect them to get rid of any important pieces.”
