The Houston Astros are keeping things light during their impressive season as they held a pregame funeral for Carlos Beltran’s outfield glove on Monday.
Standing in the background, wearing a priest’s robes is former Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann, who delivered the eulogy.
Beltran has played just 54 innings in the outfield this season, and hasn’t played there since May 16. He’s finished with negative defensive runs saved in every season since 2009, making his move to DH for the league-leading Astros a smart choice.
He won three consecutive Gold Gloves as a center fielder from 2006-08.
Beltran has struggled so far in 2017, hitting just .231 with 11 home runs in 77 games.
Beltran told the Houston Chronicle: “I love it. I have fun with them. They have fun with me. That’s what a team should be.”
