The Braves acquired right-handed pitcher Shane Carle from the Pirates in a trade Wednesday for a player to be named later or cash. The 26-year-old was designated for assignment twice in the past three weeks by the Rockies and Pirates.
Carle made his major league debut with the Rockies in 2017, when he had a 6.75 ERA in three September relief appearances. He gets a spot on the Braves’ 40-man roster and is not out of minor league options, meaning he can be sent to Triple-A.
His fastball has been clocked as high as 95 mph, and his “out pitch” is a splitter. The Braves plan to use the right-hander as a reliever.
Carle was DFA’d on Dec. 29 when the Rockies needed to open a spot on their 40-man roster after signing closer Wade Davis. Carle was claimed by the Pirates on Jan. 4 and then DFA’d again Sunday.
He spent most of the 2017 season with the Rockies’ Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate, posting a 5.37 ERA in 36 games, including three starts, and totaling 50 strikeouts with 22 walks and no home runs allowed in 62 innings.
A 10th-round draft pick by the Pirates in 2013 out of Long Beach State, Carle is 27-29 with a 4.10 ERA in 131 games, including 76 starts over parts of five minor league seasons.
He was traded to the Rockies for pitcher Rod Scahill after the 2014 season and had his best season was 2015, going 14-8 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts in Double-A and Triple-A with the Rockies.
