The Braves released Luiz Gohara on Friday, officially ending the once-promising left-handed pitcher’s time in the organization.

The release came two days after the Braves designated Gohara for assignment.

The Braves originally acquired Gohara and another pitching prospect, Thomas Burrows, in a January 2017 trade that sent outfielder Mallex Smith and reliever Shae Simmons to Seattle.

Gohara made five starts for the Braves late in the 2017 season, encouraging the Braves about his future.  But he has pitched sparingly and largely ineffectively since then, battling injury and weight issues. He underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery earlier this year.
