Top Braves pitching prospect Max Fried had a short outing in his first start for the Double-A Mississippi Braves Thursday night.

The left-hander lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) before leaving due to lower back tightness on a chilly night in Pearl, Miss., as the Braves played the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

“He had a test after it; he felt fine,” Braves general manager John Coppolella said. “It’s just something where it was the first start of the year, it was cold, and we didn’t want to risk it.”

Fried walked three and struck out two.

“It’s probably something that was a factor in that he didn’t throw as well as he normally does,” Coppolella said. “But I think that the good news going forward is that it isn’t anything long term. We’ll (check) him again (Friday), but he felt fine when he came out. It was just not something we wanted to push.”
