Sixteen teams from across metro Atlanta will take part in the Braves' fifth annual Jackie Robinson Invitational Tournament Saturday, April 9, in Atlanta.
The Braves have invited 16 baseball and softball teams ranging in ages from 5-12 years old to play in a tournament to honor to commemorate the 69th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The teams will come from Duluth, Jonesboro, Stone Mountain, College Park, Lithonia and other parts.
The tournament, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Braves Baseball Academy at the Villages of Carver YMCA on 1600 Pryor Road, includes an essay and poetry contest and a Pitch, Hit, and Run Skills Challenge for kids 5-8 years old.
The teams will be recognized in a ceremony and parade before Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Turner Field.
The Braves and Major League Baseball will mark Jackie Robinson Day on Wednesday, April 20. The Braves will face the Los Angeles Dodgers at 7 p.m. at Turner Field.
