Andrelton Simmons remained out of the Braves lineup Friday and it appears the shortstop won’t be back during the weekend series with the Nationals as he battles a left ankle sprain.
Simmons said he has felt significant progress after receiving treatment on the Braves’ off day Thursday.
“It’s been gradually feeling better but the jump from yesterday to today has been pretty noticeable,” Simmons said.
Simmons was injured Tuesday night in Seattle and has not played since. Ramiro Pena started at shortstop Friday against the Nationals.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team would like to avoid placing Simmons on the 15-day disabled list.
“It’s one of those injuries where 15 days might be too much but six might be enough,” Gonzalez said. “If we can avoid those 15 days with him, I would like to take a shot at it. There has to be a lot of communication back and forth – from him telling us he is getting better. I don’t see him playing this weekend but I think we need to hold off a little bit. We’ve done it before with other guys. If push comes to shove and we lose another infielder than we might have to make a move.”
Simmons also received treatment on Friday. He was off crutches and had a small air cast on his ankle.
Gonzalez said having the Gwinnett Braves in town this week will make it easier should the team need to call up a player to replace Simmons.
