Not that it’s a surprise, but Atlanta United will play its inagural 2017 season in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer.
The conference alignments were released on Friday with the announcement on Friday that Minnesota United will also join the league next year.
The Eastern Conference will feature:
Atlanta United
Chicago Fire
Columbus Crew
D.C. United
Montreal Impact
New England Revolution
New York City FC
New York Red Bulls
Orlando City SC
Philadelphia Union
Toronto FC
The Western Conference will feature:
Colorado Rapids
FC Dallas
Houston Dynamo
L.A. Galaxy
Minnesota United FC
Portland Timbers
Real Salt Lake
San Jose Earthquakes
Seattle Sounders FC
Sporting Kansas City
Vancouver Whitecaps
The team's roster of players is ongoing, but it seems likely there will be an expansion draft to help both Atlanta and Minnesota stock its rosters.
Atlanta will begin training camp in January and its season will start in March. It will play its first three months of games on the road because Mercedes-Benz Stadium isn’t scheduled to be completely constructed until June 2017.
